Complete Umrah Guide

Everything you need to know about performing Umrah

Introduction to Umrah

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj which has specific dates. It is often called the "lesser pilgrimage" and holds great spiritual significance in Islam.

While Umrah is not obligatory like Hajj, it is highly recommended and can be performed multiple times throughout one's life. Many Muslims choose to perform Umrah during Ramadan due to the increased spiritual rewards.

Steps of Umrah

Step 1: Ihram

Enter the state of Ihram at the designated Miqat (boundary). This is a state of spiritual purity and dedication.

  • For Men: Wear two white unstitched cloths - one wrapped around the waist, another over the shoulders
  • For Women: Wear modest Islamic clothing that covers the entire body except face and hands
  • Make intention (Niyyah) for Umrah
  • Recite Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk"

Step 2: Tawaf

Perform seven circuits around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction.

  • Start from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)
  • Circle the Kaaba seven times
  • Make supplications (dua) during each circuit
  • End at the Black Stone

Step 3: Sa'i

Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, following the footsteps of Hajar (Hagar).

  • Begin at Safa hill
  • Walk to Marwah hill (one circuit)
  • Return to Safa (second circuit)
  • Complete seven circuits total

Step 4: Halq or Taqsir

The final step of Umrah is cutting the hair.

  • Men (Halq): Shave the entire head completely
  • Men (Taqsir): Trim hair evenly from all parts of the head
  • Women: Cut a small portion of hair (approximately fingertip length)
